Ingham County, Michigan’s seventh most populous county, is located in South Central Michigan and is home to the city of Lansing, the state’s capital, as well as Michigan State University, Lansing Community College, and a number of manufacturing plants. Approximately three-fifths (57.3 percent) of the county residents live in a large urban center; the remaining residents live in the surrounding suburban areas and rural farmlands. Preliminary numbers for 2018 from the medical examiner indicate that there were 94 total drug-related deaths in Ingham County, most of which were opioid-related (death rate of 24.8 per 100,000 residents). Toxicology reports revealed that 60 percent of those with opioid-related deaths had fentanyl and/or fentanyl analogs in their systems at the time of death. Twenty-nine percent had heroin in their systems, and 22 percent had commonly prescribed opioids. Ingham County used its Building Bridges implementation funding to strengthen connections to treatment, including MAT, in the community for individuals who leave the jail.
