With approximately 977,203 residents, Marion County is the most populated county in Indiana, with 14.4 percent of the state’s total population, and the locale of the state’s capital and the 16th largest city in the United States, Indianapolis. In 2018, Marion County estimated that it saw 341 opioid overdose deaths, 3,762 overdose events, and 1,457 naloxone events. Marion County/Indianapolis is developing a new community justice campus, which will provide for a new jail facility designed to more effectively supervise and serve people who are incarcerated. The county would like to develop a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) system that is consistent across all of the intercepts of the criminal justice system and is heavily connected to the community-based treatment system. Marion County is using its Building Bridges implementation funding to hire an MAT coordinator to coordinate patient flow through the MAT process in the jail and coordinate with the local methadone clinic as needed.
